The University of Torino (UNITO) is one of the largest Italian Universities, with about 70.000 students, 3.900 employees, 1.800 post-graduate and post-doctoral research fellows. Research and training are performed in 27 Departments, encompassing all scientific disciplines.
As for internationalization, UNITO is involved in roughly 450 formal international cooperation agreements with institutions from all around the world (South America, Mediterranean countries, India and China, in addition to Europe), including joint educational programs at undergraduate and doctoral level.
UNITO is deeply involved in scientific research and manages roughly 500 projects per year, both at national and international level. The long record of participation of UNITO in the EU strategic research agenda is demonstrated by 115 FP7 funded research projects and 42 H2020 funded projects, among which 8 ERC grants (6 ERC as host institution).
The Earth Science Department (DST) of the University of Turin (UNITO) is actively involved in several research areas connected with Raw Materials. Mineralogy, petrography, structural and rock mechanics, engineering geology, mining geology, geotechnics and geophysics experts operate in the Raw Materials area to develop tools and methodologies to work out solutions for highly impacting problems involving optimization of geo-resources exploitation and their use.
The scientific community and public/private stakeholders are beneficiaries of the issues from such a research activity. In particular, special emphasis is placed on geo-resources characterization, quantification and development of novel technologies in which they are used. All this is carried out paying attention to design actions aimed at curbing environment/health impact and preserving a full match with historical-architectural local background.
The researchers’ skill and level of international/national networking/cooperation with private and public institutions are proven by the large number of publications, research contracts and projects it coordinates.
